FSSAI(Food) License

F SSAI registration or Food License is a mandatory compliance used to ensure the safety of food products and it is essentially a food safety certificate issued by the food authority in India. Every food business operator involved in the manufacturing, processing, sale of food products and storage distribution must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License. It is a 14-digit numeric registration or a license number that is printed on all the food packages. This registration procedure is aimed to create more answerability on the FBO to maintain the quality of the food products.

This step is taken by government’s food licensing & registration system to ensure that food products undergo certain quality checks, thereby reducing the instances of adulteration, substandard products and improve accountability of manufacturers by issuing food service license. License can be applied for maximum for 5 year. 

Food License is Mandatory for the Organisation engaged in Food Business and therefore various provisions applicable on it so such Food License should be as per provisions of the act otherwise such Non Compliance of these provisions lead to hefty fine, Penalty  on the Management of organisation.

It is very important and mandatory for all food business owners. Every food business operator which is involved in the business of manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License. It is a 14-digit registration or a license number which is printed on all the food packages manufactured by the businesses.

There are 3 types of License under FSSAI-
1. Basic Registration:-

(a) Food Business which manufactures or sells any article of food himself or a petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor or temporary stall holder; or distributes foods including in any religious or social gathering except a caterer; or

(b) Such other food businesses including small scale or cottage or such other industries relating to food business or tiny food businesses with an annual turnover not exceeding Rs 12 lakhs and/or whose
(i) production capacity of food (other than milk and milk products and meat and meat products) does not exceed 100 kg/ltr per day or

(ii) procurement or handling and collection of milk is up to 500 liters of milk per day or
(iii) slaughtering capacity is 2 large animals or 10 small animals or 50 poultry birds per day or less.

2. State License:-

1. Any FBO with an annual turnover of more than Rupees 12 Lakhs but upto Rs. 30 Crore (In Case of Wholesaler) and upto Rs. 20 Crore (In Case of Retailer, Distributor, Restaurants, Marketer).
2. Any Dhaba , Food Caterers, Canteens having turnover more than 12 lakhs.
3. Three Star or Four Star Hotels.
4. industries dealing in the food business and the following:

3. Central License

1. Any FBO having businesses in more than one state then central license is required form principal place of business.
2. Any FBO with an annual turnover of more than Rupees 30 crore (In Case of Wholesaler) and more than Rs. 20 Crore (In Case of Retailer, Distributor, Restaurants, Marketer).
3. Any Importer.
4. Any Five Star and above Hotel.
5. Food Vending Agencies having more than 100 vending machines.
6. industries dealing in the food business and the following:

Basic Documentation for  various level of FSSAI License.

1. Copy of the Pan Card of the Company/Firm/LLP/Society/Trust.
2. Self attested copy of, Bank Statement, Landline Bill, Power Connection Bill, water Bill in the name of the establishment, Any license/certificate/number issued by any Govt. authority etc., as address proof of the establishment.
3. In case of company Memorandum/Articles of Association/bi-laws of Society or Trust/ Partnership Deed.
4. ID, Address Proof, Mobile Number & E mail ID of all Directors/Partners/Members of Society or Trust.
5. Copy of registration certificate issued under Companies Act, GST, Co-operative Society act, Importer and Exporter code etc.,
6. In case of factory, License number and date of issue of license.
7. Business Activity of the Company/Firm/LLP/Society/Trust.
8. List of food products to be dealt with.
9. Food safety management system plan.
10. E-Mail id and Mobile number of the firm/company.
11.Form-B duly completed and signed (in duplicate) by the proprietor/ partner or the authorised signatory (mandatory for all)

Additional Documentation for State/Central License

1. Food safety management system plan or certificate
2. NOC and copy of License from the manufacturer (In case of Labellers and Packers )
 3. Analysis report of water to be used in the process to confirm the portability
 4. Name and list of equipment and machinery used with the number and installed capacity (In case of Manufacturer)
 5. Production Unit Photograph (In case of Manufacturer)
 6.Certificate provided by Ministry of Tourism (In case of Hotels)
 7. Declaration of Turnover
8. Undertaking from FBO in prescribed Format
9. IE Code Document issued by DGFT(Central License)
10. Ministry of Commerce Certificate (For 100% EOU)(Central License)
11. NOC and copy of License from the manufacturer (In case of Labellers and Packers )
12. Analysis report (Chemical & Bacteriological) of water to be used as ingredient in food from a recognized/ public health laboratory to confirm the portability (mandatory only for manufacturing and processing units only)
13. NOCs from Municipality or local body. (optional)
14. Further other Documentation required depends upon the kind of Business
